Emergencies

Emergencies often occur with new crabs after having spent weeks or even months in conditions that cause stress due to overcrowding, environmental deficits, lack of safe or nutritional foods, or shell shortages just to name a few.

Emergencies can also happen in established tanks - They are not exclusive to beginner-keepers.

I will try my best to shed some light on these emergencies along with some guidance, but please reach out to someone with research and experienced backed knowledge for real-time support.

When dealing with an emergency, I encourage you to look at your tank and the situation objectively. Review your own tank:

  • Is the substrate mixed correctly and does it ACTUALLY fill half of your tank?

  • Is your tank large enough for the amount of crabs you have?

  • Do you have sufficient heat and humidity and how do you monitor it?

  • Do you have enough shells?

  • What does their diet consist of?

  • Are there any decor items known to be toxic, including pine hides?

  • How long have you had the crabs?

  • Are you using the correct measurements of marine grade salt and dechlorinator? And, are you using the appropriate products to treat water?

  • Have there been any pests in your tank?
